Meg Ryan
Blond-haired, blue-eyed with a bubbly
personality. Meg Ryan was born Margaret Mary Emily Hyra in Fairfield,
Connecticut, to Susan (Duggan) (Duggan), who was an English teacher and actress
and Harry Hyra, a math teacher. She has Ruthenian, Polish, Irish and German
family heritage ("Hyra" is an Irish and Ruthenian surname, and
"Ryan" is her maternal grandmother's maiden name). Meg was graduated
in June 1979 Bethel high school in Bethel. Meg then moved to New York City and
studied journalism at New York University. Meg Ryan was her new name, began
acting to earn a little extra as she finished her education. Her screen debut
came in 1981, making a brief appearance as Candice Bergen's daughter in George
Cukor's last film Rich and Famous (1981). She auditioned and was eventually
selected to play Betsy in the daily TV soap as the World turns (1956). She was
a part of the show's cast from 1982 until 1984. Meg was also part of the TV
series One of the Boys (1982) but it was swiftly removed. She relocated to
Hollywood in 1984, and was offered an interview for the western television
series Wildside (1985). Meg was in a small part in Top Gun (1986), later being
cast in Steven Spielberg's Innerspace (1987) In which she was starring
alongside Dennis Quaid. In D.O.A.'s remake, she once again played alongside
Dennis Quaid. (1988) and got married in Saint Valentine's Day 1991. Meg made an
appearance in the 1989 film When Harry Met Sally... (1989), and the scene in
the restaurant became famous. Meg was twice nominated for the Golden Globe and
BAFTA. In 1990, she co-starred with Tom Hanks in Joe Versus the Volcano (1990)
and this time she played three roles as DeDe/Angelica/Patricia. She appeared
again alongside Tom in the hugely successful Sleepless in Seattle (1993) in
which she was nominated for the Golden Globe. Meg determined to act against her
peers in 1994, playing the character of Meg as a mother and wife who is
alcoholic in When a Man Loves a Woman (1994). Then, she was back to
"cute" with both I.Q. (1994) and French Kiss (1996). In 1994, Meg won
the Harvard Hasty Pudding Award as "Woman of the Year" and was named
as being one of "The 50 most beautiful women in the world 1994" by
People Magazine.
